Paladins of the West Kingdom is set at a turbulent time of West Francia's story, circa 900 AD. Despite recent efforts to develop the city, outlying townships are still under threat from outsiders. Saracens scout the borders, while Vikings plunder wealth and livestock. Even the Byzantines from the east have shown their darker side.

As noble men and women, players must gather workers from the city to defend against enemies, build fortifications and spread faith throughout the land. Fortunately you are not alone. In his great wisdom, the King has sent his finest knights to help aid in our efforts. So ready the horses and sharpen the swords. The Paladins are approaching.

The aim of Paladins of the West Kingdom is to be the player with the most victory points (VP) at game's end. Points are gained by building outposts and fortifications, commissioning monks and confronting outsiders. Each round, players will enlist the help of a specific Paladin and gather workers to carry out tasks. As the game progresses, players will slowly increase their faith, strength and influence. Not only will these affect their final score, but they will also determine the significance of their actions. The game is concluded at the end of the seventh round.

  • Unlock this to unlock that to unlock something else...it feels very precedural - "Develop. Good, well done, now Trade" - and so on. There's just something intrinsically lifeless about it all. I'm hopeful that the solo experience might be a bit more enjoyable...

After all that, I can safely say I don't particularly care about designers haha. I was surprised I knew a couple of them off the top of my head.

IMO it is beautfiul presentation of an above-standard game and I was equally impressed by #Paladins of the West Kingdom | i would rate them +- the same while they both have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The tree: true; purely table presence

The seasons; no real issue there for me; I don't take it literally as "this seasons stops and the next starts". I see it as; "starting to prepare for..." when everybody is done, that seasons starts.

Creating hard lines for seasons could have brought an extra mechanic perhaps.

"The pieces around the table " are ok; you don't gather a lot of resources per player actually. 

Many cards appear more than once and letting a card pass for the next round or not is a risk you take. every game needs a bit of random. Paladins has less random as the different paladin each round is a smaller "gearbox" for your engine than the cards in Evederdell but the effect your actions have on other players have more impact than in Paladins.

The symbols on cards; there are four. 

Grey and green are immediate
green activates on 2 seasons as well
Brown is often an extra location
Purple matters in the end.

I was not really intimidated by that and I only played it once.

I miss on experience if there is no art on cards so yeah it's kinda personal as well, perfectly cool!

 

#The Game: Quick & Easy and #Disney: The Haunted Mansion - Call of the Spirits Game were both spur of the moment purchases last month. They seemed like perfect games for Halloween, and ones I might get my 16 year-old son to play. D:THM-CSG might be the best game to get him to play in the future as he loves The Haunted Mansion.

#Azul: Summer Pavilion was a spur of the moment purchase last month for my wife's birthday.  She likes #Azul and I thought A:SP might be familiar enough and different enough that she'd like it.  We've played it once and I think she's ok with the differences (a bit more challenging and different point mechanics) that she'll like it long term.

#Paladins of the West Kingdom was another unexpected purchase.  I read and watched some reviews on it leading up to the Spiel de Jahres winner announcements that I put it on my wish list.  Then when I saw it on sale late this summer, I bought it for myself mainly for solo play and future game nights when we can hold those again in my area.

It's great, but not without slight complications. For example we try to not have too much crossovers between our collections. The fact that he owns #Paladins of the West Kingdom means that I probably never will and will just play it with them. But it also was an impetus to jump on the #Viscounts of the West Kingdom purchase earlier than I might otherwise have. Overall that's still a good problem to have!

I'm not planning on buying the whole series (got #Paladins of the West Kingdom) but I am curious to play it though.
I was wondering about the deck management myself. I suppose it has more interaction than Paladins?

Ugh. #Paladins of the West Kingdom  for only $30 on Amazon! I wasn't going to buy it because my BIL owns it. But I don't know if I can pass that up!

Cool! I have a friend who owns #Paladins of the West Kingdom, so I've gotten to play that and really like it! He was eyeing this one as well so it's cool to see such a positive review.

I still need to play #Spirit Island; I see potential to see it enter the top 10 or perhaps even 5

Playing it "fake 2 player" solo was cool already. This has potential!

Just got my copy of #Everdell and can't wait to introduce it to the family; top 10 material for sure!

Nice! The only game I've ever bought an insert for is #Food Chain Magnate off of Etsy. I'll check these out if I ever decide to take the plunge on one for #Paladins of the West Kingdom. I hate the set up in that game so anything that would make it easier would be much appreciated. The problem is the set up time makes me question if I want to keep it around in my collection period lol

I like the multiple games option you threw out. #Paladins of the West Kingdom is great, #Teotihuacan: City of Gods is equally great, and I've heard nothing but good things about #Clans of Caledonia. If I had $100+ this would be where I'd go. That being said they don't fit his historical games theme.
