Create A Faction: Root

Game Design

So I really enjoy thinking about games, especially those I like.  And part of it is thinking about how I could be part of the creative process.  At least with myself.  Since I love Root so much I thought that perhaps it would be fun to come up with at minimum a shell of a faction.  I'll post my idea in the comments.  My thoughts are to follow (at least) the following criteria

1. What Animals (and why?)

2. What would their basic Asymmetric abilities be?

3. Size and scope (ie large - Marquise, Lizards, Eyrie, Moles, medium - Otters, Corvids,  small - Wooodland Alliance, Vagabond.)

Feel free to add as much as you like, but I don't think we need to share specifics of the players boards unless you have ideas for that too!  Let's get the creative juices flowing.

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2417723/tainted-fan-faction

My fan faction The Tainted. Sick and exiled they seek to overwhelm the woodland with their presence to force the other factions into pouring resources into curing every tainted

The faction is ready for playtesting so if anyone wanna give it a go I would love your comments afterwards. There is a comprehensive ruleset on the bgg post too where some of the strategic thoughts are also written.

They are represented as fox meeples and led by Patient Zero who is a fox.

They are a very large faction

Always impressed and amazed by the amount of time and creativity in these! What's your favorite faction so far across the base game and the expansions?

Ptitmxz 32 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lizard cult is my favorite. I think mainly because I like playing the underdog.

sdirrane Supporter32 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lizards offer such a fun challenge to me.  You can always do something but you have to adjust to the other players frequently.

I’ve yet to try the Riverfolk or Corvid but they also look like a lot of fun.

Cool!  Looks fun.

Did you create the Player Boards yourself or is there a template somewhere?  If you have a template I'd love to maybe be able to use it to create my faction. (I'm not the best at design).

Cool, thanks for sharing.  This looks intense, I hope I can figure it out.

Ptitmxz 33 days ago | 1 point[-]

I hadn't used gimp before when I tried to use this template. Just start by deleting all text ad stuff that you don't need. Then maybe arangge the layers in some order that makes sense to you. And you should download baskerville pro 10 font. Otherwise just Google guides to the specifics you want the program to do.

Here are more half baked ideas:

A faction with a phoenix mechanic where it can revive fallen warriors of enemy factions but at a price.

Or, maybe it could be a single warrior that can revive itself but pays a price every time it dies and it'll come back weaker (or maybe gets stronger and stronger?)

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ooh, nice I like that.  Or maybe like a medical faction?  Someone who scores points not by defeating other enemies but by offering aid to everyone.  Again at a cost.

Here are some random thoughts:

Chameleon (not too fitting for a woodland theme, but oh well)

  • Personality/nature - Sly, cunning, thousand-faced, smooth talker, spreads rumors.
  • Main mechanics - Hmmm I'm trying to imagine having some sort of virtue/reputation track, or a way to mimic the nature of spreading rumors. A rumor would be easy to spread and sow discord among the clearings. There should also be an increasing amount of risk for each rumor you spread or for each additional clearing your reach expands to. Maybe it could have the idea of games like Forbidden Island or Pandemic, where there's some sort of risk/danger level that goes up with each rumor you spread. Assuming the Chameleon spreads rumors in a clearing by putting down cards of matching suit to blend in with the crowd, the danger level should determine how many cards you should draw and take chances with on some sort of Eyrie Decree-like tableau.
  • When a player crosses or moves onto a clearing with rumors - he/she will need to give the Chameleon a card of matching suit (because the animals have turned against you in a Woodland Alliance-like way). If the player doesn't have a card of matching suit, the player hands a card of his/her choice to the Chameleon as "hush money" to avoid unnecessary drama while crossing the clearing (like border control?). Failure to make a payment will hinder the player's movement or the ability to craft.
  • Chameleon gains VP for rumors placed. Also gets VP from crafting cards in the clearings you've earned favor from. Loses VP depending on your reputation. Other players may attack and clear out rumors in clearings but will only immortalize the Chameleon and raise his reputation (or maybe it should clear up the faction's reputation and decrease the Chameleon's instead? Hmmm)

I like it.  What about snakes?  The rumor tokens could be grass, implying that the snake is sowing discontent without the animals in the Woodland even realizing it.

The tokens while also being rumors could be some kind of trap?  Similar to Conspiracies?  If you fight in a clearing with a snake warrior and trap it triggers the trap.

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

The only thing about snakes is that a fan already made a very solid faction called Fangus Khan. It looks so creative!

Otherwise, I like it. Snakes certainly go with the theme of being silver-tongued and sowing discontent. I like the idea of warriors having some kind of a buffs (or giving debuffs to enemy warriors with persisting effects to their movement or strength due to poison or being "bound" when they're in the same clearing).

Also, it'd just be funny to have a faction (probably a single warrior like Vagabond) where he/she just goes around flinging enemies into random clearings (bear or giant chimp).

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Thanks for pointing me to that post.  It actually has links to Bots for Riverfolk and Lizard Cult.  Maybe that will help add some variety to the solo play.

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh my, that would be so annoying if you weren't that character, but I like it.  Not only do you have to plan just wars out but also keeping your distance from the Bear Pawn.

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I may have messaged Leder Games on their website with my idea.  Because I'm sure they don't get enough.  But I figured, the worst that could happen is my message isn't read.

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I'll be tagging Cole on twitter tomorrow to let him know about our conversation here! He's a busy man so he probably won't have time, but it'd be nice for him to know our excitement for his games (although, I'm sure he gets tons of those types of messages already haha).

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Cool, that's awesome.  Yeah I'm sure he gets a lot of attention, but it's also deserved.  Maybe he'll make it to the BGA neck of the woods.  He could be part of BGA Con.  A guest speaker.  It's all coming together.

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Wow ambitious!! I was hoping for an interview but a whole convention!! COOL. Especially if it is in SLO. Cannot complain about that...

1. Squirrels: They steal our garden plants and seem like a factionable creature that should be hunted and killed

2. Birdsong (Squirrels always go first):  Place a squirrel on each trail that has a squirrel and one on each trail adjacent to those trails, if squirrels surround an area of the map, steal one resource of any type from each faction that controls an base in that area Gain a VP for each stole resource and discard them.

3. Large.  They start with about 10 on the trails at the beginning of the game.  Whenever another faction moved a long a trail a squirrel is removed from the map

4. Squirrels do their birdsong and then their day is when other factions move around the map and squirrels are removed from the board.

5. Evening (Squirrels do evening after all other players have gone): Populate 2 squirrels for every one that was chased off a trail during the round

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I love squirrel hunting......

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

So the squirrel 🐿 faction is equally as annoying as they are in real life. 😂

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Don’t hate on squirrels. I love squirrels.

Ooohhh this reminds of League of Legends fans pitching ideas for new champions haha. I'll have to think more about this after work and share an idea. But before then, I wonder what it'd be like to have a faction that has the ability to transport/fling creatures from one clearing to another. Going off of what @nealkfrank mentioned, having a massive/strong creature that could throw a portion of the enemies' army into a different clearing and causing chaos.

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I can't wait to hear your thoughts.  I actually think one of the new Partisans and Exiles cards works a little like the movement idea from @nealkfrank.  If you craft it you can basically move another players warriors in one clearing.  I'm not 100% sure yet though because I am waiting to do my unboxing with my daughter (maybe today).  I did unbox the upgrade kit.

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I agree, can’t wait to hear what Phil has to say on this one.

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Awesome! I need to look into the new factions, I watched a Video on the Riverfolk and the Lizard Cult but nothing on the two new ones!

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oooo that is fun! Maybe each faction has a big animal that they can pair with to change movement and power in battles, but the big boys move very slowly!

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

The big animals I could see would be Moose, Bear, Deer, and Wolf that could fit the Woodland theme. Bear and Riverfolk could work together, Deer and Eyrie?

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Reminds me of #Everdell: Spirecrest with the big critters that small critters can mount haha

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha that's cool.  It makes me think of an expansion idea that isn't really new factions, but almost like bonus animals with their own asymmetric abilities that are added to your faction.  Maybe you could do a draft at the beginning of the game.  Something like a bear could cause a retreat of 2 enemy warriors when it is in a clearing with your warriors.

A deer could be an extra defense.

Although I'm sure some of the cards already have these abilities.  Maybe this is one you get from the beginning that is constant for you no matter what?

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I had NO CLUE that this was already a thing lol. I promise I did not rip it from that.

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I believe you xD

You know, I still have no idea what that green critter is supposed to be, the one mounting the bear. It..... looks like the head of a bald eagle or a dinosaur....

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol thanks!

It seems like it might be upside down? Otherwise I have no idea either lol

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Maybe @theDL knows?

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Perfect! Bring in a ringer lol.

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol, @philryuh @nealkfrank - it's a turtle

philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I was wondering if it was but it looked like it's wearing a hat lol. Thanks for the answer xD

theDL 4 months ago | 2 points[-]

Here's a closer look at the meeples: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/4233006/everdell

and a look at the card that has a turtle (Judge) on it: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/4255946/everdell

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

What's it doing? Praying? Haha

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

HAHA yes, this is what I thought!

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, couldn't tell ya

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I feel like it would be cool to add a "Massive" Tier. Something like a Bear or a Moose, I know the game is more about the woodland creatures, but it could add a different dynamic. I have not been able to play the game myself so I dont have a turn structure break down!

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

This is cool!

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I do wonder though if they come up with how a faction would play and then assign an animal! Rather than trying to fit a mechanic into a specific vibe!

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I think either approach is viable.

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

1. I'm thinking a Bat Faction could be really cool, maybe the "Nocturnal Nation".  I like the bat idea because of how I think they could work in a fun way.  "Tired of the warring factions destroying the peace of the Woodland day in and day out , the Nocturnal Nation seeks to restore the forest to daytime peace."

2. Their basic gameplay would be to not have any of the normal routines (Birdsong, Daylight, Evening.) Instead they will always take their turn at the beginning of every other players Evening Phase (hitting the Nocturnal Theme).  I think this would need to be balanced well and their overall actions would need to be very limited outside of crafting because they would essentially get a turn every turn.  So I'd think no card draw bonuses and maybe only 1 - 2 actions can be taken.  Additionally they must take their actions for either themselves or against the Faction who is currently taking their turn. (ie they can only battle Marquise on the Marquise turn).

3. I'm thinking they would need to be a small to medium faction in board presence because they will have so many "turns".

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I definitely like the Bat idea! it adds someone who can take on the Eyrie birds in the air!!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I would like to see some sort of plant based faction, where plants could grow and choke out clearings.
