Played a few games of One Night Ultimate Werewolf and Bang!: The Dice Game during a bachelor party I was at. Then we attempted Space Base on the wedding day yesterday but we had to stop haha
Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 2 points[-]
Still no targi? Looking forward to your report on that?
Haha sadly no... I’m hoping sometime in the next few days. I’m starting back to work this week and my wife is due any day now. So games will be hard for awhile hahaha
Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 3 points[-]
Congrats on a new baby.
Thanks! Yeah it’ll either be solo gaming (assuming I’m not to exhausted) or 2 player (assuming both my wife and I are not exhausted). Both of these scenarios are highly unlikely haha
Hey, I'm all supportive of solo gaming.
Sliddell11 4 months ago | 2 points[-]
Haha let’s just hope it actually happens!
If you get desperate enough it will.
I use to do it because of desperation. But, now I do it for fun.
Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
Haha I actually think I understand that a bit. It’s hard to get people over sometimes but you still really want to play. It’s a great compromise!
Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]
I don't even consider it a compromise any more. I don't prefer it to multiplayer games, except for some. But, neither do I prefer multiplayer games, except for some.
I can see that. I think I for sure prefer multiplayer every time, but solo is still really fun if I can’t play with others.
I will need a way to wind down for sure..

4 scenarios in my solo Gloomhaven campaign. Both of my characters are level 2 now and I’m really starting to get the combat system. I’m also loving the slight “deck-building” aspect where you pick your class cards to bring with you to a scenario.
This game is really good, guys.
nealkfrank 4 months ago | 2 points[-]
Nice! Have you gotten the set up and tear down more streamlined yet?
Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 2 points[-]
Yeah. It’s called leave it set up. Also I went ahead and got the app. It saves a lot of table space.
Ha! That is awesome! That is what I have heard mostly. both with leaving it up and the app.
Dang someone is putting in WORK
I’m just leaving it set up! Makes it easy. Plus it’s very alluring sitting over there. Calling to me...
Hahaha dude that’s hilarious. I envy your constant setup.
So glad you like it.
I had a decent week.
Last Sunday I played a game of Star Trek: Frontiers. I was really doing well and leveling up nicely. I found and attacked the first of two Borg cubes, and I crushed it. So, I got cocky and sailed in for a fight with the second, stronger Borg Cube. I was handed a crushing defeat. But, I had fun. After that I played a game of Forbidden Island "with" my three year old. I did try to give gone some more agency, which did end up losing us the game. I think he needs a little bit more time before he will really grasp the concepts.
On Saturday I played two games of Carcassonne, and I had a lot of fun. After that I taught my brother in law Innovation. Once again I was just really impressed with how every card is so broken, but that makes it work together so well. I did end up winning that game, but for quite a while he looked like he would.
It is just so fun.
nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
You ever play with expansions?
I few. They are fun. I like them. I don't know if I like them better than the base game.
My wife has some friends that come over just to play with the Dragon and Princess expansion, pretty take that and it has a lot of opportunity to swing the game status!
I really do get a bang out of that particular expansion.
You have to definitely play with people who will not take it personally when you make the Dragon eat them...then steal their castle with a tunnel...
Dude not a bad list of games!
I liked them
I keep seeing innovation, how do you like it?
I love it. But it isn't for everyone.
I only know that it’s a card game and that you don’t like the art haha
is there a theme or major mechanic?
It feels chaotic your first several plays. And it has a lot of "take that" in it.
Oh gotcha. Sounds interesting! And it’s well priced!
Interesting is very accurate. I really do love it.
I’ll check it out soon!
Going to get a couple games of #Quacks in tonight! Finally! Haha

Thus far, Paladins of the West Kingdom 2x and nothing else. Work and the trappings of life have caused me to be a responsible adult over playing any games.
I hear that.

Played Ice Cool and Treasure Hunter yesterday. My kids had a friend over yesterday and my four-year-old brought out My First Castle Panic. He set it up by himself, taught the game, and helped keep to the rules as they played. So proud. Also, my three-year-old is so good at Ice Cool. It's almost unfair haha
I have been seeing Ice Cool come up around these parts a lot! I need to look into it more! Seems fun!
It's great fun. The rules are easy to learn and it's great for any age, really. Once you get the hang of flicking the penguins around, you can then work on trick shots, which makes for some really fun turns.
I have not gotten into any dexterity games so this could be a good jumping off point!
I am in the same boat. I should probably add a game like this to the collection.
I really need to get a good dexterity game.
Dude I’ve been looking at it too. It’s super cheap but looks like it’s well done
Pretty good weekend! Was able to get Raiders of the North Sea played with no expansions and Dragon Castle both in the same session with a friend I don't get to see a lot. Always a fun time to catch up over games and coffee. It was fun even though I lost both games.......
Then that same night my wife and I were able to play 2 rounds of Welcome to... The beautiful part of it was that she suggested playing it! And suggested the second game! The best!
Wow. Congrats with the wifely suggestion.
It is always a beautiful day when she offers up a game, even better when she knows exactly what she wants to play lol.
Yes it is nice.
Dude you got Welcome to!!! How is it??
I did! It is great! I laminated a couple of the sheets and will getting some expo markers here soon so I have taken some measure to pimp it out lol. I have played it a couple times prior to getting it but it is a fun quick game, I would call it a warm up game for some other good stuff. Or a nice relaxing night in playing a couple games with Melanie.
Dude that’s perfect! How long does it take?
If everyone knows how to play 25-30 minutes. Very quick and even soothing!
Haha not to often am I soothes by a game! That sounds nice! Would be a great game to play when we’re waiting for Charlie! Lol
Lol definitely, it is soothing in that you dont have too many decisions to make, every decision you make scores you points but it is a matter of maximizing those points. Pretty clever game.
Yeah I like the sound of that, like it won’t kick you in the pants for a dumb decision... another to the wishlist!
True, definitely point salady in that regard but all about min/maxing and choosing the ideal card combo presented.
But who doesn't love a good kick in the pants every once in a while...

What’d you think of Raiders?
I like it, I have played with all of the expansions and none of them and much prefer with expansions. Without them it turns into "gather resources, raid, gather resources, raid". The expansions allow for a much deeper strategic experience.
That's good, I just have Hall of Heroes but I'm excited to add it next time I play.
I personally like the Hall of Heroes expansion better than the fields of fame. The fields make it a little agonizing.

I played Unlock! Squeek & Sausage with my family. It was a good time. We don't care about our time, just figuring out the puzzles. This was was two locks instead of the last Noside one we played which was one, but this one seemed almost a little easier. The last puzzle we were so close to getting it naturally but had to use the hints. We were SO CLOSE, but it threw us for a loop and was a good time. Does't hurt that I have a local place I can rent these for $1.50 for a week.
The other game I played was Terraforming Mars. That was a game I think I might make a thread about.
Good old TM. Do you have any expansions for it?
Skyw3rd 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
Nope, borrowed from a friend. First play, beginner corporations. I have mixed feelings about it.
Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]
The beginner corps are just that - a beginning. You shouldn’t judge it until you pick one of the other corps. They really spice up the game and help you start with a strategy in mind.
My reservations are more about component quality and the fact that I own games that have similar feels to TM but look better and play in a shorter amount of time.

I finally received my Kickstarter copy of Oceans: An Evolution Game! I played a quick intro game weird my wife just to see how it plays, but haven't yet played a full game with all of the rules. I'm excited to do so!
I also got in a couple games of Kingdomino during a double date, and a game of 7 Wonders Duel with the Pantheon expansion at work.
Ohhh I loved the look of Oceans, but did not dive in (pun intended) to understand the gameplay enough. How would you describe the play mechanics? Tableau builder mostly?
Haha, I have always found it difficult to describe Evolution, and now Oceans. There's a bit of tableau building, but nothing in your tableau is necessarily permanent, so that's not how I would choose to describe it. In addition, you are controlling one or more different species, and each of them has a "tableau" (or set of traits) that is separate from that of the other species.
I would say it's closer to an engine builder, as you're trying to build species that are best equipped to deal with the ever-changing state of the reef/ocean and compete with the species owned by your opponents. In Oceans, you only get to "feed" one of your species per turn, but that doesn't mean only one of your species will get to eat. You can build species that are pretty much self-sustaining, as they can either feed when other species feed, or passively leech population from other species, etc.
It's a really interesting game, and I'm really looking forward to getting some more plays in, especially with a bigger group (we just played at 2 players).
Sounds really interesting.
Yes it does
Oh ya, that definitely sounds like a game that flourishes at higher player counts so you aren't just beating up that other player in 2p! I will have to look more into this one! The art alone is worth a glance.
It's interesting though, there is definite competition, but even at 2 players, you aren't necessarily attacking each other every turn. You can attack, but you can also feed by "foraging", which is taking population from the common supply in the reef. In addition, there are traits that allow you to "gain" population when certain events occur, which is also taking from the common supply, in this case from the ocean. So even at 2 players, while you are competing, you're not necessarily attacking.
Yep, it's pretty fun. Oceans has 12 different "surface" traits, which can be combined and even duplicated for all kinds of cool creatures that interact with each other in interesting ways, but the really exciting part is the almost 100 "Deep" trait cards, all of which are unique, and very powerful.
Nice! Seems simple of the surface mechanically but complex in other ways.
I like that sort of deal.
I’m excited to hear more about how you like Oceans! It looks so cool!
theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
I plan to play again tonight (still at 2 players, though). We plan to play the full game instead of the introductory "reef variant", so I'm excited for that!
So cool! They have an intro variant?
Yup! Honestly I don't really feel like it's necessary if you're a gamer, but maybe if you're introducing more casual players (like a wife, perhaps, lol), it might be a good idea. It removes the "scenario" cards and the "Deep" cards.
That’s pretty cool! Makes me think of Evolution Climate or the family edition of Agricola
Well the game is a sequel to Evolution, so it should! I love that game, haha
Haha I’ve only played it once but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully I get to try oceans soon!

Only got two games in during our 6 hour game day, Nemesis and The Isle of Cats.
I wasn't expecting to be playing such a long game until about 15 minutes before arriving, but Nemesis was worth it for sure. We were playing with semi-cooperative rules so we all had our own objectives. Nobody chose an objective that was against the group, so we were helping one another quite a bit. In the end, we all ended up dying at the hands of various aliens without escaping or hibernating. Even if one of us had hibernated, the ship wasn't destined for earth so it didn't matter. I look forward to playing this again soon.
I just got my copy of The Isle of Cats this week, so I was eager to get it to the table. Everyone really enjoyed it and even though I covered the most spaces on my ship, I came in last by a few points. I opted to wait on getting private lessons cards during the first round drafting phase and only got a few good ones in the later rounds. I won't repeat that mistake in the future.
Was it your first play of nemesis?
It was our first play so there was the whole learning aspect plus rule clarifications throughout that made the game take longer. The couple that we play with had played it once before with the full coop rules.
Glad you enjoyed isle of cats. It looks beautiful.
1nf1n1ty Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]
I am really intrigued by Nemesis. That may need to be in my collection at some point. It sounds awesome.
Not gonna lie, I love cats. My cat rules. When I saw Ilse of Cats being produced I was intrigued but it seemed overly complex for I was hoping. Do you feel like it is easy to pick up?
disom 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
It's very easy to pick up, even if you're playing the regular rules that involve drafting the various cards in the game.
If complexity is a issue, it comes with a streamlined Family version set of rules and cards that removes the drafting. I think our youngest (6) could play with the Family rules if we helped her a bit. Playing with the family rules for a while would prepare casual/younger gamers for the regular rules.
I mean I am fine with complexity, I love Gaia Project, Brass, Concordia, all fairly complex games. I guess I was hoping for a more soothing game like carcassonne! I will have to look more into it.
I would not call it soothing, lol. There's always a good chance that you won't get all of the tiles you want each round. So that forces you to make due with what you can take.
I will just have to shift my expectations for it then! I like tile laying so I will give it a shot.
BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]
Nemesis is so good. I've played it once as well and we almost made it. That tension near the end is insane, and I love it.
This is scheduled to be played the next time my game group gets around to meeting.
Have so much fun :)
The tension really made the ending for us. I had a one chance to do a noise roll to take an escape pod, which would have won me the game, but the roll failed. I held out for a few more rounds, but never got another opportunity.
That was about the same with us. We had one guy in stasis, watching everything go down the drain quickly. All I needed was to enter stasis and the game would be over and I would have been the sole survivor and winner, but I had to battle a Queen that had spawned on my location. The ship blew up before I could defeat her even haha
That is sorta hilarious
We were all nervous laughing by the end of it. And that's one reason I love this game.
That is great
At least you didn't give her the satisfaction of killing you.
haha So true! If I have to explode, the monster might as well explode with me.

I've been playing the Wendy's Feast of Legends which has been very entertaining! It's a very simplified D&D campaign but still full of laughter and plenty of skeeming!
I'm hoping to get Forbidden Island soon because I've heard only great reviews. The price point is nice for the amount of play time and has been recommended more than once.
Anyone else have any ideas on quick play time games for 3-6 people?
philryuh Supporter4 months ago | 2 points[-]
I've also heard that Forbidden Desert is a little more challenging and has more replay value, but also takes a little longer to play (10-20 min). I've only played Forbidden Island and have been enjoying the quick co-op game time with my wife!
Other games that are well received and have quick game time (that I can think of at the moment) are:
I've been looking into Welcome to, at first glance I don't know but most everyone has good things to say. So I'll keep digging.
I love the sounds or horrified and Forbidden Desert. I'll probably get both Forbiddens if I'm honest though.. Pandemic was definitely fun to play but it didn't really pull me in right away, I'll give it another try if I find someone who has it. I like the old times monsters too 👍🏽
I have been enjoying Welcome to!! Very accessible for all groups but also scratches the itch for an experienced gamer!
Forbidden Island is way better than its price point would suggest.
Ok good to know
Just got in some Welcome to and Terraforming Mars last night with @nealkfrank and some of our other friends. Such a good time.

Trismegistus, Trails of Tucana, and Hansa Teutonica
I was instantly attracted to the idea of Trismegistus but it looked like a lot to keep track of/complicated haha
I didn't find it to be bad. Complexity wise, it's probably about 3.5 (BGG scale), but it makes use of real alchemical symbols which complicates the learning of the rules.
Ooooo Hansa Teutonica, that is a classic game that is on my list...but hard to find.

Broke out some games with the kids that haven't seen any play in a while and a couple new ones.
For Sale - This needs to see more playtime. Everybody enjoys it, and it's perfect for those nights when there's no time to pull out the big games.
Survive: Escape From Atlantis - I threw in everything but the squids.
Sheriff of Nottingham - Generally not a fan of this one, the kids like it, but we usually have to many people to break it out. This was probably the 5 the play for us and it was the 1st time I've enjoyed playing it.
Tsuro: Phoenix Rising - 1st play, it's okay. The kids had fun, but I think I prefer Tsuro of the Seas.
Claustrophobia 1643 - Big fan of this one, it's lopsided in the best kind of way, still haven't seen the humans win.
The Fox in the Forest - I really like this one, it's the 1st trick taking game I've played that wasn't hearts or spades.
Coffee Roaster - decided to grab the app to see if I'd like the game. Turns out, it's fantastic, but I'm nott sure if I'll pick up a physical copy
Jaipur - Played on the app. This one is on the shelf, but it's getting dusty.
Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated - Scheduled and rescheduled so many times. Trying to get this to the table more than anything, but can't get the 3 other seats filled at the same time. I swear I might just play this one solo. 🤪
Wow that’s a lot of games! Haha sounds like a fun time.
Do you like Jaipur? I know it’s kind of a classic, but I don’t know much about it.
Haha that is satisfying when it’s not you...

Machi Koro Legacy
Harry Potter: Death Eaters Rising
MacGyver: The Escape Room Game
I haven’t played a single one of those.. any you’d recommend?
Depends on what you like. I think if I were to recommend only one, it would be Ghost Stories!Ghost Stories
That looks interesting! Is it only co op?
It is. But you can play it solo.
That is definitely a good thing to consider..
Never heard of kerala. You like it?
Yes! Great tile-laying game with beautiful elephants! Kerala
I also just got a quarter of the way through my first play of Targi! Bummed I couldn’t finish it... I also won a game of 6 player Catan, so that was fun lol
Targi is fantastic. I need to pick up the geekup bits for it, but I'm waiting for the bits for The Quacks of Quedlinburg to come back in stock before pulling the trigger.
Yeah that will be a tempting buy for me too. The more and more I play with cardboard or wood pieces, it just makes me want good solid components...
First impressions of targi.... Please...
Haha I was going to wait for the full play through... but it was great. From what I got I really liked it since it plays smoothly/interestingly. You have choices that have layers. It’s supposed to take an hour but seems like it would feel quicker because of how much movement there is. Replayability seems good since about half of the cards are different every time. Overall it’s super good from the couple rounds I got to play!
Good. Good to hear you are still excited about it.
Haha very much so. I just need one person to play with haha
