Played a solo game of #Clans of Caledonia
Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]
How well did you do?
sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]
I got pretty close to 115 points which is the top for the "Newbie" score level. You don't actually try to score more than the Automa you just try to reach different levels. I also believe I missed giving myself points for a couple of the end of round bonuses.
I hate that feeling of wondering if you missed something or not.
Yeah, thankfully for me with Clans I still feel like I had a great time and really got to play the game. Which is the most important part.

That’s the best part of playing solo.
Yes it is.

Got in another play of #Heroes of Land, Air, & Sea with the Pestilence and Order and Chaos expansions. Love the new factions in these expansions, especially the Birdfolk, as they have some interesting abilities. Also, that floating continent just looks super cool. We also taught it to my brother-in-law's girlfriend, who isn't a gamer by any means, and yes, she did enjoy it. So that's another win!
That game sounds so cool.
Man I think I want try this game. Sounds like the $$$ could get high.
BenjaminK 3 months ago | 2 points[-]
It’s so stinkin’ good. But yeah it could get pretty pricey. Fortunately, I won the base game in a giveaway Gamelyn did during its original Kickstarter and then I got the expansions for review. I must say I am very lucky/blessed in that regard, otherwise there’s no way I’d have it.
Wow, that is good.
Oh wow that's awesome. Very helpful.

Got in a couple games of #Carcassonne: Star Wars Edition. First time it got to the table in almost three years. I know it isn’t a favorite of #Carcassonne purists but I enjoy it more than the original simply due to the combat mechanism that adds a little bit of “take that” to the game.
BenjaminK 3 months ago | 3 points[-]
I like Carcassonne, but I think I'd love the Star Wars version. One, the theme speaks to me, and two, I think that combat mechanic would be fun. Now I just gotta play it haha
There is a Star Wars Version?!?!??!
theDL 3 months ago | 2 points[-]
How does the combat work?
CaptainPossum Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]
Really really abstracted. Each players rolls 1-3 dice depending on a couple factors. Only the highest die roll from each player matters. If there is a tie each player gets 1 point and they roll again. The loser gets a point per dice rolled and removed meeple from contested area. The winner leaves their meeple in place.
One cool thing is if you place a tile next to an occupied planet you can choose to fight for that planet instead of putting a meeple on the tile you just placed.
For me the fun is in winning or losing a fight and the mild frustration that causes more so than how the combat functions.
Haha nice. Sounds like a nice little twist on the original!
sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 3 points[-]
It's nice that it has some new mechanics and it's not just Carcassonne with a Star Wars skin.

The only thing I managed to play last week was three games of #CIV: Carta Impera Victoria. It is a great quick little game.

I have never heard of this, what is it like?
I wrote about my first impressions here.
Excellent! I will read through that.

Played a game of #Nemesis in which the player that played as the Android won by escaping on an escape pod with an intruder egg. The ship blew up right after and everyone else died.
sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]
I think I'd really like to play this game. I don't think I'd end up buying it at any point but sounds like it's very thematic. Did you happen to put on some Alien Soundtrack music? I think that'd be really fun.
taksDK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]
Yeah if you get a chance to play it’s definitely worth it for the stories that come out of it. It’s very luck dependent so that isn’t your thing it might not hit with you. There is a YouTube video of ambient sounds specifically for Nemesis that is a lot of fun
I don't mind luck. Although I don't like luck that is so central that there is no way to try to work around bad luck. Catan is a great example to me. If you don't get rolls and therefore don't get resources there is no way to mitigate it and actually get to play the game.
Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]
Sounds like that produced a good story at least.
Yeah definitely! Very thematic
That is very valuable in a game like that.

Solo #Arkham Horror: The Card Game (still on Night on the Zealot), #7 Wonders Duel, and #Dice Throne.
Despite being on my second fail on The Devourer Below, I'm still pumped. It feels like I'm learning to play better as I go. I'll stop that ritual yet!
Played #Gloomhaven, #Underwater Cities, and #Terraforming Mars solo this week. Fun was had. Very much fun.
Gloomhaven has to be on my I have to play someday list. I'm excited to hear what you have to say about Underwater Cities.
I have batteries in progress for both Underwater Cities and Terraforming Mars.
Taught my daughter the Eyrie, we played as a team against the Mechanical Marquise and pulled out the win. Eyrie just agains the Mechanical Marquise is pretty easy without the challenge cards. But that's good for teaching a new player.
Man I'm getting more and more excited for my copy.
Had a pretty solid game night this Saturday.
#The Resistance - the Resistance got owned. The Spies played the game really well.
#Welcome to... - 7 player game, two of the guys liked it so much they said they were going to buy it! One even put it in his Amazon cart lol.
#Puerto Rico - Holy moly I really liked this game. I bagged on it for a bit just because of how ugly it looked, but I loved my experience with it, just the right amount of mean, fun strategy and you are constantly doing things based on the different roles selected!
philryuh Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]
I'm so curious about the new Puerto Rico game. The new art reveal looked amazing.
I have not been able to see that! Where did you find the new art?
Not sure what the story is on these yet though. There haven't been many details.
Weird, the tweet is gone!
Yeah, the link shared by the OP was quickly taken down. Seems like there may have been some miscommunication and it got leaked too early maybe. In the thread, you'll see one of my comments sharing a link that goes to a different tweet by a non-English account.
Got it! The box art looks cool though, hopefully the components are inmproved too.
Yes, I am quite excited to see that as well. I am very curious to see if they make a good two player or solo variant as well.
I do still really enjoy #Puerto Rico. Sometimes I'm afraid that a lot of new gamers don't get to play it.
I've heard the name before but never played it or really looked into too much myself. What's it about?
You are basically colonists building up San Juan and plantations, making money and points by buying and selling your different crops. Mechanically, it is a role selection game. There are 7 roles in a 4 player game, when one person selects a role, everyone else gets to do that same action, but the person who selected it gets a bonus benefit. It is the father of #Race for the Galaxy!
Cool, sounds like a theme I'd enjoy.
They are coming out with a new version of it here soon that should hopefully be more pretty lol.
That's always nice to hear.
Yup. I'm always a big proponent for great art and quality components. Aesthetics are huge for me.
Looking at your collection, you do have a lot of games with solid graphic design!
Of course there is a lot more to a game. But I do like to look at what I'm playing and really appreciate it's beauty of the play as well as the art.
It is definitely a perk! It does a lot to draw you in.
Wow I have not seen the Powerpuff girls in a while lol.
It was #1 on BGG for a long time.
It was the original hype train!
When I got into gateway games I introduced #catan to my friends, one of my buddies got but by the gaming bug, and he stayed buying games. He bought a bunch of games, even though non of the rest of us were really into gaming. One of those that he bought was #Puerto Rico, solely based on the fact it was #1. That one we actually latched onto and played a lot of.
I think I would play it over quite few of the games above it on the BGG ranking list.
I have yet to try it but it seems like something I would really like.
If you like Race for the Galaxy you would def enjoy this!
I don't know if that is strictly true. I love both, but, in puerto Rico there is no hidden information, none. Neither is there any randomness. This does lead to a very deep strategic game, whereas race is a very swift tactical game with a fair amount of hidden information in hand of cards, and randomness in card draws.
Ultimately I like race better, but they are both awesome games.
I said that after not every playing Race, just Roll, but that makes sense. I have heard there is a lot of sifting through the deck for a specific card in Race which adds that randomness.
But it is so so fun.
It is on my list of games to play with @Sliddell11!
Was it the first time you played it?
Yes it was my first play through, there was some sloppy play for sure lol, but overall I really enjoyed the way the game and the roles functioned.
Glad you had fun.
Ya man, I am hoping to get some more plays in!
I don't think that it scales as well as some more "modern" games. That is why I don't have it right now. But, it is one of the best euros out there in my opinion.
Are you saying it does not scale well player count wise?
Ya I don not think I would play at 2 players, this would be a 3+ game for me.
I am not even sure the box allows for two.
It looks like it does, but it does not interest me.
You are right. It almost seems like I did play it once at two but there were some special variant rules or something.
Ya I think they take out a role or something, definitely alters things a little.
It is a lot less of a gane if I recall correctly. I know I disliked it sufficiently to never play it again.
Lol very good, what do you mean by a lot less of a game?
It was a lot looser, and wonkier. It's probably been 5 years, so I forget the details.
Huh, interesting. I would not categorize PR as loose!
It most definitely is not. I love a mean Euro games. And, I would say that PR is a mean Euro game.
For sure, I hogged a whole ship for my coffee which made people have to throw out many many pieces of corn, definitely my proudest move of the game.
So so fun. That, in my mind is so much more satisfying than battling on a open battlefield.
I completely agree, I liked the feeling of being clever enough to fill up the ships in a way that benefited me most and hurt the other players the most too!
I feel like it is generally wise to make sure there are sharp objects within your friends reach before doing something like that.
There ARE sharp objects? You are very adventurous lol.
I was on mobile and mistyped. Make sure there are NO sharp objects within reach.
Livin life on the edge!
Keep edgy..... But don't stab anybody.

Just one game session this week but it was a good one!
Bargain Quest is a fun light game I got to play with my youngest. I think it could be considered a great filler game.
Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 3 points[-]
I’d love to pick up Bargain Quest at some point.
It's definitely a great one for play with the kids too.
Agreed. If you sort of role play as a shop keeper it adds to the fun too!

Gamenight last night:
Also of course used #Start Player
Awesome. Do you play with both expansions for Raiders? What is you like better about Raiders over Architects?
When I it, I played with both. I like it better than architects because I find it a bit deeper, less 'take that', and I feel the theme a bit more.
sdirrane Supporter2 months ago | 1 point[-]
I'll be excited to play it with Heroes (the only expansion I have right now. Interesting to hear it has less Take That than Architects, that actually causes my interest in Architects to go up.

Played Massive Darkness again, which was really enjoyable. We aren't playing the campaign mode, though. We're enjoying the quests as one shots because the game is fairly easy to jump into and it's good for satisfying the need for a dungeon crawl without getting into a campaign if you just want a one and done session.
Also played The Others for the first time this week. I was really looking forward to the game, but was rather unimpressed. It'll likely go to our sell list. We're going to give it another go and see how it feels. We played 2p -- I was the hero side and won, but it wasn't really enjoyable to play. Most of the game felt hopeless and then it came down to two lucky rolls at the end. I'm not against dice chuckers, but this one was just a miss for me.

I thought I had posted already, but do not see it. I have playtested the Viticulture Essential Edition app. That's my first introduction to the game and it's been great. On the table I have playtested a game a friend is designing. Also, good gaming.

#Clans of Caledonia (2p) - Shared about my first impressions here
Also solo'd a game of Clans last night. Tonight, my wife and I will be trying out #Atlantis Rising (second edition)!
How'd the solo play go? What did you score?
It made me want an insert again! I'll have to buy it real soon. As for the gameplay, I slowed down way too much trying to make the optimal moves hahaha. Next time, I should try to make my decisions a lot faster.
Otherwise, it was a very satisfying gameplay where I felt like solving a tough puzzle. Having all of the 1-value spaces blocked off sure made it challenging. I scored 124 and got zero bonus from settlement (I had 6 settlements within shipping reach) so I placed as a "rookie". If I had played faster, I would've ended up at "newbie" I think.
I like a good challenge and the top score ranges seem like a big mountain at the moment. I also like being able to test out each clan and seeing their strengths. I played with the clan that encourages specializing in building (getting more discounts the more you build the same type). I went for a strategy where I pretty much went all-in on wheat fields and distilleries. Sold off lots of whiskey for money so that I can make use of the market for goods and to expand with animals to slaughter them. Seeing the score, I'm sure there are many ways I can improve :)
Wow, nice score for game 1. I haven't cracked 115 in three or four solo games. I may have to look up some strategies, which isn't my favorite, but there is something I must be missing because I've never won. Haha. At least I still really enjoy the process.

Everdell, and I did some play testing of my own personal games
I went to Orcon (Strategicon) over the weekend. I got quite a few plays in and some solo plays
Game of the con for me:
I've played the app, but I just can't get into #Terraforming Mars. Glad I'm not the only person who's not 100% on it.
I definitely need to play it again before saying it's not for me. It'd be helpful to play it correctly, haha.
Said in the cadence of Princess Bride: Have fun growing the algae!
It is an interesting game. I can see why it is popular. The theme is pretty strong for a euro. There is a sense that you are terraforming. The variety of cards is pretty amazing as well.
There is something that is a little flat for me, but I have mostly played solo games so I am interested to see how it will be with multiplayer.
I feel like it can be difficult to get good combos. In some games, I get two cards that work amazing together, in others it is all limited to a haphazard mix.
I like it and it is a good game, but I have many I like better.
Glad you like unbroken. It has been on my radar for awhile.
I only have the Heroes Expansion for Raiders but I haven't tried it yet. I'll be glad to get it out next time I play.
