Favorite Small Games

I can’t remember if a post has gone out recently about this, but what are your favorite small games? My criteria is not cost, but literally the size of the box itself.

I love my large box games, but there’s something really nice having a Lost Cities sized game or even as small as Star Realms. I like these games because typically they are easy to take out and play at a moments notice and have a minimal setup, teaching, play time, but do not lack in strategy and outright fun.

Unleash the opinions!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

#hanamikoji is high on my want list.

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Get it! Great 2 player game, especially if you like the feeling of Lost Cities, which if I remember correctly, I think you do

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I think I would love it. It just one of those games that lived in my cart without every making it to checkout.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

There’s always too many of those games...teetering on the edge.. lol

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I really like Lost Cities haha

great....another one to the wishlist... haha

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

How does hanamikoji play? I’ve never heard of it

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

2 playersThere are 7 "geisha" cards in the center over which you're competing for the majority. You're each dealt a small hand of cards, and 4 tokens representing the actions you can take. You will do each action exactly once per round. The actions are:
  1. Place a card facedown to score for one of the center cards
  2. Discard 2 cards facedown
  3. Pick 3 cards from your hand. Your opponent gets to select and play one of them, and you get the other 2.
  4. Pick 4 cards from your hand and put them into 2 sets. Your opponent gets to select and play one set and you get the other.

Each of these cards are played under the corresponding geisha card, and at the end of the round, whoever has the most cards for that geisha has control of that one. If no one has 4 of them (or 11 points), so it again.

It's full of agonizing decisions.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Dang I can tell! I can already imagine that one or two cards you desperately want, floating through your decisions to the end of your turn to then be played... I’ll check this one out for sure.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

The retheme #Jixia Academy is easier to get ahold of.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah it seems like it. I just think I’d like the older art better.

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Fair warning: for a while (not sure about now), it was out of print in the US but they made a re-themed version under the name Jixia Academy, which is the version I have. That might be the easier version to get. It's the exact same game but different art.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Sick that’ll be helpful in the event that I can’t find it haha

BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

It's so good. I have never had to make such difficult decisions in any game. I really really love Hanamikoji.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Dude I will say you’re really good at selling games haha

theDL 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, someone hire this man!

#Silver is also really fun

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Dude it is! I’ve only ever played the app

fred_131 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I enjoy:

Fox in the Forest

Tiny Epic Galaxies

Codenames

Coup

Love Letter

Bang

Sushi Go

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

That’sa good list! I’ve never looked into Love Letter though. How does it play?

fred_131 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Love Letter plays very quick,  has a decent amount of deduction, and is very portable. I played it mainly during the time after my daughter was born and didn't really have time to play a long game.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

When you say deduction, is it like coup or the resistance? Or is there more “gameplay” involved?

fred_131 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

It has some similarities to coup in the fact you are trying to figure out the identity of the other players. The deduction is logical not social. The different role cards are used to narrow down the possibilities or protect yourself.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Gotcha. That sounds interesting. I can only take so much social, so the logical sounds like a good way to mix it up and streamline it

sdirrane Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Do Tiny Epic games count?

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Sorry only small games... haha just kidding

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha very good. I’ve never really play tiny epic games. But they look fun!

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Have you ever been able to win at Sprawlopolis?

BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I have, a number of times. I think I'm about 50/50 in the win/lose department. It is one of my most-played games though (only really play it solo), since it plays fast, so I've had lots of practice.

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Look at you! That is impressive, I have played probably 8-10 times and have come close maybe 2 of those times...Do you focus on just one of the goals? All three? What is your key to success?

BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

haha I'm not sure. It does depend a lot on thee combination of goals. Some don't play well with others, making them quite difficult. It took me more than a few to finally win one, but after playing a lot back to back, you get a better idea of best placement. Since I haven't played it in a long while, I bet I'd lose the next time I play haha

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Goodness... I haven’t even heard of some of these haha but I’ve been interested in twice as clever. Roll and write, right?

BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Write Right. It's a great one.  It's fantastic solo, but also fantastic with others. One of my wife's favorites.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha nice. I’ve never played any roll and writes... this one and welcome to have been subtly rising on my list

BenjaminK 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I've never played Welcome To, but I'd highly recommend Twice as Clever.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Good to know. Thank you!

Crazybirdman Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I'll add my favorite Oink games #Deep Sea Adventure & #A Fake Artist Goes to New York

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ugh I have wanted to get Deep Sea Adventure, just have not pulled the trigger. I love a good push your luck game.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I’ve always wanted insider buy them! How do those games play?

Crazybirdman Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Deep Sea Adventure is push your luck with a bit of a social aspect, as you have to know/guess what others are going to do.

A Fake Artist is like Telestrations, more of an activity than a game, we don't bother keeping score, and have a whole Lotta fun.

There's the excellent Shut Up & Sit Down review of several Oink games.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha those sound great. I’ll have to look for the video. The artwork in those games look great/fun

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I also would like to Shoutout to small box games I recently acquired that I haven't played yet, but I really expect to enjoy.

CIV: Carta Impera Victoria

Deep Space D-6

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I’ve never even heard of these haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Look up civ. Looks sorta interesting.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I will!

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I’m actually not a very big small box fan. I think the only small box game I have is Kingdomino, which I got to play primarily with my kids.

It’s a good self-reflection question to examine why I don’t enjoy more small box games.

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Kingdomino is a great game though. Very accessible with good decisions to make!

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

It really is. Almost every time I teach somebody how to play they immediately tell me they want to go buy it.

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

It helps that it is like 12 bucks lol.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha on a good day, then it shoots up to $20... I think the expansion is more expensive than the base game which is funny

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Wow... gloomhaven or nothing... haha

How come you don’t like very many light/small games?

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I guess it’s because if I’m going to spend money and use my time I’m looking for a big experience. Something satisfying and deep.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I totally get that! I think what I look for in a small game is something to play before everyone gets there or with non gamers. But my favorite games are like what you described

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Does Gloomhaven count?

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Where there’s a will there’s a way! Haha

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Where there is a well there is water?

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha did you see my autocorrect??

Skurvy5 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Nothing gets by me!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I second some of your choices.

I would add.....

Innovation

And

Impulse Card Game

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ah good choices

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

My list would be as follows:

Lost Cities

Star Realms

Targi

Kingdomino

Codenames

disom 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I don't think I can settle on just a few. Small box games are my jam! I would pick all 5 of the ones you listed and add:

  1. Circle The Wagons
  2. 6 nimmt!
  3. Patchwork
  4. Biblios
  5. No Thanks!
  6. The Fox in the Forest
  7. Hocus
  8. Sushi Go!
  9. Hive Pocket
  10. Point Salad
  11. Onitama

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

#Patchwork man, so good, limited decision making space but it feels great to get the perfect piece!

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I’ve wanted to try this one for awhile. And Azul! You must introduce me Neal haha

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

#Azul is great. I have played a lot! A good warm up game imo. I dont have patchwork at this time, but it will be in my future.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh I thought you had it! Oh well! Eventually one of us will haha

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Nah my sister-in-law does, we played it a bunch at Hume this last summer.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

So many good ones!

What do you actually do in point salad and in hive?

disom 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Point salad is a set collection game. Each card has a vegetable on one side and a scoring opportunity on the other. On your turn you draft two vegetables cards or one scoring card from the general supply of face up cards. At the end of the game you add up your points and then subtract any penalties. Example: A scoring card may say you get 3 points for every cabbage but -1 point for every carrot. You typically have a dozen and a half or more scoring cards so you need to balance what you're drafting. An ending board for you might look like this:

Hive is an abstract game where the object is surround your opponent's queen bee. You have a set of different bugs that all have different movements (kind of like chess). On your turn you can either add one of your pieces to the board OR move one of the pieces you had already added by following its movement rules. An end game might look like this:

Marshwiggle92 Supporter4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Hive is so good.

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

It does look like it!

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Those look super interesting. I have a friend who has give so I’ll have to ask him to bring it sometime! Point salad looks like a light fun way to get the points you want from a board game. I can dig it haha

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Who has Hive?

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Charlie has it!

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

What the heck...

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah bro. He’s always got the weird random game you wouldn’t think that he would ever have... haha

nealkfrank 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

This is true, I appreciate it though, he brings some different stuff to the table that I would not have tried with out him!

Sliddell11 4 months ago | 1 point[-]

I know! The three of us have just slightly different tastes that helps us get to know some stuff
