7 Wonders New Edition Announced by Repos Production

A new edition of 7 Wonders is slated for September 2020 release. Why is this a big deal?

  • 7 Wonders was the first game to win the prestigious Kennerspiel des Jahres (Connoisseur-Enthusiast Game of the Year.) It has since won more than 30 different awards across the world
  • 7 Wonders still remains one of the most popular and commercially successful games out there despite its age (published in 2010)
  • 7 Wonders is a great strategy game that has introduced many people into the hobby world

Here's the new edition:

According to Repos Production, the main goal of the new edition was to appeal to a wider audience by making a visual overhaul and by streamlining the rulebook. Changes include:

  • Larger box and updated insert design
  • Visual updates for box cover and minor changes to card illustrations
  • Larger Wonders cards
  • Changes in card design and iconography
  • Streamlined rulebook

Looks like this new edition is essentially "catching up" to the advancements in design and visuals that we've seen through its successors such as 7 Wonders Duel and its latest expansions.

So... What do you think about this new edition? Would you consider replacing your original copy with this? Or for those who've never jumped on board—will this convince you to make a purchase after all these years?

Here's an unboxing video from the publisher:

Been delaying buying the original but whit this.... oh boy, i think this is the version I'm getting now!

I actually prefer the old style art. Perhaps I am just accustomed to it. I cannot afford to replace my game as I have all of the expansions in the old art style so I will just hang onto it.

Oh man... This is pretty cool. I am tempted for sure...I really enjoy the game, and the new components look awesome. I got my copy secondhand and it was kinda beat up to begin with... Hmmmmmmm

Hm I wonder if they'll be doing the expansions too. I have the Cities expansion, which is pretty cool.

I always just go to the final scoring page of the rulebook as a refresher on what we need to do to get the points to win. Rest of the rules are great for a first time read but not needed after that.

A more streamlined rule book sounds nice. The current one seems way too difficult to get through for the kind of game it is

After checking out the comparison of the new and the old version I think that they made some nice updates to the design and functionality of the cards. But bigger size of wonder boards, also the day and night side does not make sense.

They say that they balanced some of the wonders. Well than they better sell an update pack for the old edition if they don t wanna piss off people who already bought the game with all expansions.

For people who like/ok with the old edition design and they don t own the game its gonna be a good chance the get one under $20.

Does this one will still include the 2 player variant (not interested in buying duel just to play 2 players)?

Streamlined rulebook is great. The larger box sounds like a terrible idea, if it is wider or longer. I suppose they can make it deeper if they so desire.

It looks to only be slightly larger, rather than an altogether different form factor.

Yup, I should have clarified. It's not a big change in size.

Gotcha, however they are at a "standard" ttr sized box right now. It does seem a shame to change it at all.
