If you could have any game in the world for free right now...what would it be?

I think for me it would be a toss up between Brass: Birmingham and Architects of the West Kingdom or maybe a Feast for Odin

What are the rules?  Is it base game only?  If not I'm going to pick the entire lot of Star Wars Armada.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Gosh that changes things entirely...

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Well since I haven't been denied I'm going to pick this as my choice.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Love this answer.

philryuh Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]

Tough question.. I'd probably give this to either #Lisboa or #The Gallerist. Might as well get the most expensive one in my wishlist!

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

My guy, I could see you going for The Gallerist due to the artist theme...but Lisboa is a visual marvel in the gaming world too...

philryuh Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

The only thing is that I could see my wife getting very overwhelmed about the rules up front. Will have to watch a run through this weekend because I have no idea how both of them play. I like both of their looks but the theme of Lisboa sounds very interesting.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yes, The Gallerist is not an easy game rules wise, and especially strategy and planning wise. Vital Lacerda games are beasts.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Great choices.

Um  Forbidden Stars ... no question about it!

BoardGameHalv 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I was going to give this some thought, but there is like a solid gold and gem-encrusted copy of Monopoly in France that is worth $2 million. I will take that.... I bet you never thought someone would answer "Monopoly".

WadeB1977 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

You got that right! However, a gem encrusted Monopoly does sound pretty intriguing

1nf1n1ty Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I mean, if I could just have one drop in my lap for free, I'd take a collector's edition of war of the ring. It is probably one of the most valuable games out there and is super impressive as a bling game.

I was craving a copy of Saturn for some years, but I am over that.

I think I bought everything I really wanted. Now I think I'd like room for another game shelf rather than add another game!

Crazybirdman Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

If im just going by the standard equation  (value + rarity)/game I actually want to play, the I gotta pick #Small World collectors edition.

Although I desperately need more time more than I need more games.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I didn’t know they had a collectors edition!

I feel you about the time though...

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

@Sliddell11 I am curious what your answer for this would be!

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Dude I have no idea... I need to think about this..

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 2 points[-]

This is really time sensitive............ just kidding

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I’m thinking!!!!!

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Okay....here they are...

1. #Roll For The Galaxy

2. #Root

3. #Great Western Trail

i think that’s my answer...

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Interesting list! You haven’t mention Roll or GWT so I didn’t realize they were on your want list.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ahh I love roll! Seriously one of my favorites! As for gwt, I like the theme and mechanics!

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I have almost pulled the trigger on GWT a couple times too...I keep second guessing myself.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I know... it’s pricey... it’s one Riley actually got me interested in. Soon one of us will get it! Hopefully! Lol

rkalajian 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Kingdom Death Monster for sure. It's my current grail game!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Can I change my answer? I’d love to try #Kingdom Death: Monster

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

No you can’t

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Woof, that game is so outrageous in scope, price and...everything!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

And WadeB said he’d buy it for us!

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Hahaha he’s trapped now

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Wait what?? When?

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It’s his post. It was implied that he would.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ahhh yes, definitely. We are all getting our wildest dreams!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

That’s why I’ve never made a post like this before.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I was actually about to make a post before I saw this talking about our White Whale games....it would have put much less pressure on me to purchase everything for everyone lol.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol. That would be much better. Thanks WadeB!

WadeB1977 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

As soon as I find that $ I stuffed in the couch....

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

That poor couch must be over flowing. You’ll need a lot to cover multiple copies of some of the games people are posting about.

WadeB1977 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yep, applying for a new job right now. Hopefully they hire CEOs with no prior experience.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

#Mage Knight: Ultimate Edition would be my answer right now. Although I would strongly consider #Gaia Project.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

#Gaia Project is free on TTS.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Mage Night and Gaia have always been in the background of my mind.  Although I think Gaia dropped when I heard it compared to #Clans of Caledonia.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

There are similarities, but GP is less economic and less resource conversion than Clans and more complex.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

@nealkfrank has Gaia and he loves it👌🏻

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I have been encouraging @Skurvy5 to hop on for a bit lol...

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I want it! I’m still kicking myself for not grabbing it when I saw it on sale one time at a LGS. But the wife said no.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I had interest in this until @philryuh said it was decent, but likes Root much better (if I'm remembering correctly it was a while ago.)

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I think the game systems are a little opaque. But, I don't know for sure.

I do remember @trentellingsen and @philryuh talking about it in a somewhat unfavorable manner.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I have gained A LOT of interest in this game. I watched a playthrough on Heavy Cardboard with Cole Werhle and it all clicked for me finally. Very slick mechanically but super deep strategically. And it just looks INCREDIBLE visually.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Amen

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Is there anything else that interests you about it?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

The theme is a huge draw for me in addition to what you said.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

The 19th century afghan conflict is a huge draw for you? I mean once I looked into the game more and read about the research Cole did I am hooked now, but it is not a traditional theme. Do you have a connection to the it?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

No I don't. But I'm a history buff, and I love the seeing historical themes that don't get much press. There are hundreds of war games that focus on wwii or wwi. There are thousands that deal with the heyday of colonialism in the America's. But there are very few that deal with the Porfirian regime in Mexico like #Pax Porfiriana therefore I am hugely interested in it. The same way with pax Pamir, there just aren't many games about the "great game" that Europe played in that part of the world.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Maybe I’m wrong but Pax just doesn’t hold a ton of interest for me.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Sorry... Lol

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

So you are telling me that I’m wrong?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I don't know that I'm saying that.... I am mostly teasing you. But I everything about this game is so so me from the history, from playing the player, from the tactical considerations...... I totally respect your right not to be grabbed by it. I just am so so grabbed by it I feel sorry for those who aren't.

Disclaimer ; I haven't played it....

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol. I’m not against it... but I’m also not that into it.

R0land1199 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

A lot of the games others have mentioned are awesome choices. I am very lucky to have a lot of “buyers” in my group so the expensive classics are available to me already through one of the gang

So for me I’ll go with #Empires of the Void II,  #Heroes of Land, Air, & Sea, or #Kanban

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 2 points[-]

Are you keeping your eye on the #Kanban EV kickstarter?

R0land1199 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I was but then another guy in my group said for sure he was going to get it.  He has Lisboa, The Gallerist, On Mars, and all that so I figure he can collect the set. :)

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 2 points[-]

So you are just doing him a favor then... good on ya.

R0land1199 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

LOL.  I suppose.  It's a win win.

You mentioning the kickstarter reminded me that he was doing it so I should take it off my list of games.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 2 points[-]

No I did you a favor! Wins all around!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]

I have Empires 2 and it’s great. Your other choices interest me too!

R0land1199 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I'm kicking myself because I was on the fence as there was a copy at my local store when they had a sale a while back and I didn't pull the trigger.

My main issue is that it seems great but I do have a fair number of "Epic" game experiences so it might be hard to get to the table.  Is it a long game? (Not Twilight Imperium long obviously but maybe 5 hours give or take?) Maybe I'm thinking of it incorrectly.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 2 points[-]

No, not that long. The first time we played it it took maybe 3 hours. And that was the learning game.

R0land1199 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Good to know!

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Well I guess I'd go with one of the more expensive ones near the top of my list - maybe #Viticulture: Essential Edition or #Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ahhh I want viticulture so bad....

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Both of these are on my wishlist!

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, copycat!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Nuh uh! You copied me!

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

😁

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Two games on the brain that are either expensive or hard to find. #Lisboa and #Pax Pamir (Second Edition). I have made a full 180 on Pax Pamir. I thought it was overrated, then I listened to an episode of Game Brain on it and it totally made me rethink it. I rewatched the teach of it on Heavy Cardboard and now I’m enamored with it. Very elegant and tactical and sooooo gorgeous. I’m hooked.

#Brass: Birmingham is another game on the brain but I have the deluxe edition and it is amazing 😬

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Dude these are great. I would gladly play any of these alongside you. Haha

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

One day, hopefully a reprint for Pax Pamir is coming at some point...

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I honestly don’t know anything about it but have heard it’s good!

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I am currently obsessed with it. The look, the gameplay, everything. I know it will be a long time until I can get it but I am pumped about it.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I gotta look into it now... I’ll be back lol

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It took me honestly a couple tries to even understand the point of the game, but once you get it it clicks and its beautiful. The blocks and the cotton game board help a lot too...

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I just saw that... it looks incredible. The components are top notch! And the artwork is great. I want to look more at the gameplay for sure

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

All of the art is real historic Afghan art pulled from different books and historical recountings. The box art cover was even commissioned out to a Afghan artist. Cole did his homework.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ahh so coooool! Man why have I never heard of this

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It is really well regarded in the heavy game circles, but it is tricky to wrap your mind around everything which it seems like thats why it is not always brought up!

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh for sure, and probably why it’s not ranked higher. Super intriguing. Thank you Neal for opening my eyes.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It is also super new to on the scene, it was released in May 2019 I think? So it is still new, but it has an 8.4 rating on BGG and it is already in the top 250ish, pretty good for a newer game.

Sliddell11 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I think that was the 2nd edition, but even still it’s almost a brand new game compared to the first! 8.4 is really high to for bgg!

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ya! The second edition is the one I am longing for!!
