Danger zone pt. 2

@philryuh had an interesting post where he asked what words make you interested in a game. You can check it out at https://www.boardgameatlas.com/forum/rrx6Drkfmz/danger-zone.

I wish to ask what immediately makes you lose interest in a game?

Kickstarter!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Change that to ks exclusive... And I'm with you.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Well yes that’s what I meant

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Then, I'm with you.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh also, I don't mind minis in a game but it's a huge turn off for me when that is the lead line

Includes 145 minis!  No gameplay description. Like what?

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh also when they say “More than 142 miniatures!”  - just tell us the number. Is it 143? It’s 143. Just say 143.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It is usually cause the minis are not assembled, and they throw one extra piece in there... So you have 142.19 minis. Jk.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

So more flair then?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

No, just a custom avatar.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ugh that’s the worst.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

That is annoying

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Co-op and if it looks like it's going to be multiplayer solitaire

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

  • Co-ops
  • Horror/Cthulhu
  • Zombies
  • Party

Those are the main ones I don't care much for. That said, I love some co-ops (i.e. The Reckoners), some horror/Cthulhu (i.e. Nemesis, Cthulhu Wars), and Zombies (i.e. TE Zombies is the only Zombie game I've played, and I dig it). Party games are usually out, although I'll certainly play them if others want to (just keep it clean is all I ask haha).

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Of course you love Reckoners. It’s Brian Sanderson!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

You need to be competing with for the lord of the gifs title.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I just saw that comment after posting this haha I think it's fate. Game on!

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Scott has a huge lead but Ben is catching up quickly.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Go Scott. Go Ben.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

How very unbiased of you haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I just want more gifs.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oooo boy!!!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Of course

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Piggy backing off the post about what are you reading.  I've really had a growing interest in Sci Fi that has a semi horror element.  Planning on adding Lovecraft to my wish list.  This actually moves Cthulu almost back into something I'd consider.  Previously I had no interest in that.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

One of the reasons I like Cthulhu Wars is because I did read some of Lovecraft's stories. There seemed to be so many Cthulhu-themed games that I had tot read them to see what all the fuss was about. It wasn't until I'd read them that I began to consider the them in board games. Still, I won't seek them out and I'll usually want to play something else entirely, but it does help knowing the lore.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

This is true. I’ve only read one Lovecraft novel. Didn’t really see what all the fuss was about.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah. I read enough to understand the lore but stopped well before I'd finished what I'd set out to do haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I love and read a bunch of stuffy classics... But he is beyond stuffy in my mind.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Personally I think he is a poor writer.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Different style for sure. Styles have certainly evolved since then, and honestly, I prefer something more modern.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It doesn't have to be more modern, but maybe a writer who is at least sane?

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Sane would be good haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It would be a good place to start

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I think it would draw me to playing a Cthulhu game if it's available.  I doubt I'll feel strongly enough to purchase one though.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah, I don't think I'd ever intentionally buy one either.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I really would like to play that one in spite of total lack of interest in the theme.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

it's a great game. The asymmetrical factions are wonderfully designed.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

And highly priced.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Which is why I'll never get it. Fortunately, someone in my game group has absolutely everything for it, so I'm OK haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lucky dog.....

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Good for you.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I too am in the boat of maybe there is one or two coop games I'd like.  But I feel like I just keep seeing coop after coop now.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I like co-op.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Do you prefer to play competively or cooperatively?

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I prefer to play games. So... yes.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I definitely feel like there are too many.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Zombies. I'm with you.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Words that make me shy away include....

  • Real time gameplay.
  • Midweight coop. I like light coops and I like the heavy coops. Not a huge fan of stuff in between.
  • Heavy narrative element.  I don't think games are great narrative mediums. I prefer games that allow you to tell your own story.
  • Team play
  • Point salad
  • Dark/horror/cthulhu theme
  • Expansions that are released at the same time as the base game.
  • Ccg/lcg

Just to be clear, I like sobre games in these categories, but I tend to start losing interest in researching it more if I see these sorts of things popping up.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ooh yeah.  Point salad is one I also avoid.  I don't really care for something where the points seem almost meaningless because there are so many of them.

nealkfrank 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I have a very similar list.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Designers/Publishers..... Take note....

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ah real-time could be in my list as well. I've played real-time games with friends and had fun, but I would never choose it myself and would definitely never buy one.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

They're might be good ones out there, but I haven't played any that I liked.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

What are some good, heavy co-ops you like?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

#Spirit Island

#Star Trek: Frontiers (played it only once as a coop, but really enjoyed it.)

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I didn't realize Frontiers was cooperative. I figured Spirit Island would be mentioned haha Have you played The Reckoners? If so, what are your thoughts?  I'm a big fan of that one.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

You can play frontiers solo, coop, or pvp just like #Mage Knight

I haven't played the reckoners, but, it looks interesting.

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Ohhhhh! OK, I think I get it now. Sometimes it takes me a minute haha

I find #The Reckoners Board Game to be very good. Perhaps not as deep as something like Spirit Island, but definitely challenging.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

How long does it take you?

BenjaminK 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Once everyone's got the flow, it takes about an hour and a half with about 4-5 players.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Thats not bad at all.

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

What is yours?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Hey I was going to post them and slipped my mind. Sorry.

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Oh there are several things, which I guess is good, since it means I don't want to buy as many games.

  1. Legacy/campaign games. Just not interested.
  2. Miniatures. Makes games more expensive, and I tend not to enjoy the types of games that use them, though that isn't always true.
  3. Dungeon crawlers. Kinda related to #2
  4. CCG/LCG. I don't want to keep buying the game.
  5. Cooperative games. To a lesser extent. I am interested in a couple of cooperative games, but I'd say the bar is much higher. It's generally not my thing.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Wow, I like a lot of these types of games.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I will say that, while I mostly agree with this list, I do think there are great games in each of these categories.

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, well they're all yours, then.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Legacy is a turn off for me too.  Unless it doesn't require destroying the game.  Or if you do destroy it it becomes it's own version of a stand alone game.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Amen. I am not so jaded that I have come to the place that I enjoy destroying components.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It feels wrong.  I mean if I think about it logically I suppose I'd be okay with a Legacy game that gets destroyed based on the following qualification.

$45 or less, with 12+ scenarios to play out.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I don't care how logical it is. It still feels wrong.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Good one.

philryuh Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I'm very very similar, except for co-op. I'll piggyback off of all of these and add:

  • Crude humor
  • Bluffing/negotiation (to a lesser extent)
  • Real-time
  • Cthulhu/horror
  • Dudes on a map type of games like Cthulhu Wars
  • 2.5+ hours of gameplay
  • Complexity below 2.0 on BGG (unless I'm looking for a family game)
  • Practical art xD

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

You could convince me to play all of these games. But that’s probably because I’m so desperate to play games. I don’t mind long, complicated games.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

For me, I would say that adult humor is the only thing that would nix all my interest.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Hmm. For the most part I’d agree with you on that point. But every once in a blue moon and with a certain group of people that type of game could be played. But mostly it’s not appropriate.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

But, then there is always something else that would work.

philryuh Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

My wife and I typically play in the evening after our son goes to sleep so if it's anything longer than 2 to 2.5 hours, my wife starts getting real sleepy toward the end haha. And if it's in the day time, our son's nap usually takes around 2 hours. So the time limit I consider is mostly for practical reasons lol

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It’s sad when they don’t take naps any more.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yes it is

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

But then that means no more diapers and they sleep better at night. So that’s good.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

There is that.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

That is where I am with my wife, actually I would draw out limit at 90ish minutes, though a learning game could be longer. But, since I have discovered this wonderful world of solo gaming..... I have al sorts of opportunities that I didn't have before.

Skurvy5 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Hurray for discovering solo gaming! I’m in the same position.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

It's awesome.

sdirrane Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

I would love 2.5+ hours of game.  If I could actually dedicate the time and I had the group to do it.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yes sir

theDL 3 months ago | 1 point[-]

oooo I 100% agree on bluffing. If there's a game where I'm required to lie or it's heavily encouraged, I'm not interested.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter3 months ago | 1 point[-]

Crude humor +1

complexity below 2 +1 (in fact, I start looking away under 2.5ish, though I have some games in the 1's that I love.)
